A report from the Work and Pensions Committee highlights this week how, despite being banned more than two decades ago, asbestos remains the single greatest cause of work-related fatalities in the UK. For example, in 2019 alone there were over 5000 reported deaths directly related to cancers such as mesothelioma. As a result MPs are stating this week that the Government must commit to a strategy to remove all asbestos from public and commercial buildings within 40 years.

To commemorate hundreds of UK teachers who have died as a result of exposure to asbestos a long lasting memorial is being built.

This week is Asbestos Awareness Week, running from April 1 to April 7, Acorn Analytical Services has fundraised and contributed to the memorial project. This week new research has revealed an extraordinary amount of council buildings in England alone, contain potentially dangerous level of asbestos. A national law firm, Stephensons Solicitors LLP, carried out first-hand research and concluded that over 30,000 buildings owned by councils in England contain asbestos.

Out of 333 council organisations in England Stephenson’s sent an information request too, 253 responded confirming they own or manage at least one building where the substance is present.

The Alban Arena, located in St Albans, Hertfordshire is "on schedule to reopen in the late spring", the district council for the area has said.

Asbestos removal at St Albans’ Alban Arena will cost almost £240,000 the District Council has confirmed, this follows the pantomime performance of Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs being cancelled in December following asbestos safety concerns (a story which we covered in a previous blog, click here to find out  more).

An inquest has been told how the death of a former employee of the electrical board on Christmas day could be partly because of asbestosis that he had caught due to his work.

Brian Hayes who died at the age of 87 was a retired weaving shed employee for the electrical board and the court was told how Mr Hayes’ cause of death, aspirational pneumonia had been brought on by the asbestos related lung disease.
